BDSM is an acronym standing for Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism and can also include Submission as the S letter and Domination as the D.

It is often divided into 3 distinct yet closely-related segments:

  • B/D - Bondage and Discipline - a sexual behavior incorporating the use of bondage and punishment to heighten arousal.
  • D/s - Domination and Submission - a sexual practice where one partner is the dominant, and controls or dominates the submissive partner. Not only in sexual play but in all aspects of the relationship, The dominants role is to guide the submissive in his/her life and to protect and care for them as well making sure all their needs are met. The true D/s relationship is one based on absolute trust and respect for both the top and the bottom in the relationship, and is an expression of true deep love. BDSM can be an integral part of a D/s relationship but this is not always the case, it is more a relationship where one person is in charge and looks out for both partners needs and requirements. D/S can be experienced either by play-acting a scene, as a 24-7 lifestyle choice, or anywhere along the continuum between the two extremes.
  • S/M - Sadomasochism - a symbiotic sexual relationship where one partner is sexually aroused through inflicting punishment or pain (the sadist), and the other partner is aroused through receiving punishment or pain (the masochist).

The overlapping of these letters to form the BDSM acronym is symbolic of the overlapping of the sexual behaviors.
