[[Red eye]] is a photographic term referring to the subjects [[eye]]s appearing to have a red glow. This occurs when the lighting source reflects off the rear portion of the subject's eyes (retinas) back towards the camera before the iris can constrict. To avoid red eye, off the camera flash units are recommended. The built-in flash is close to the lens, and when the subject looks at the camera, the flash can bounce back off the back of her eyeball. Increasing the angle will reduce this effect. Another means is to bounce the light off the ceiling or other surface.

Many photo editing applications have a simple tool for eliminating red eye from an existing picture. Care must be given when this tool is used, as making the eyes appear to be one uniform color can be distracting to view.
