Dead link

Dead links are busted links - links that do not work as desired. A dead link may lead one to a blank page, a 404, or be redirected to a page the user did not want.

There are many reasons for links not working:

Hyperlinks are the mainstay of the internet. When links no longer work, it is like setting up an incomplete overpass on the internet's superhighway - the traveler crashes. Building webpages, even a VW Wiki page, needs to avoid dead links. First time visitors to VW Wiki may get the wrong impression and some users will dislike having to Back button out of a dead link.

When the person making the link makes a typo, the user's browser has no idea a simple typo was made. When adding a link, please test the link when previewing the changes and fix the broken links before clicking Save Page.

Within VW Wiki, a wiki link may lead to an entry with no content. No one has yet written content for the page. Registered Users can add content they believe is appropriate for the entry. This is not a dead link, but a link calling for volunteer Wiki Editors/Users to write.

A common source for dead links at VW Wiki is linking to current/active contri. The link will go dead when VW removes the contri/e-contri. Making a page that requires continual monitoring is not recommended.
