Socks (or sox) are tubular articles of clothing for the feet, generally made of cotton or wool. Stockings are generally very thin socks made of nylon or silk. Socks can be worn for warmth or for play. Socks are also worn to keep the foot from rubbing against the inside of a shoe or boot to prevent forming a blister. Some people even try to match their left sock to their right sock, while others just try to find two clean socks to wear.

Socks come in all sizes. Some are made to not be seen outside of the shoe, some cover the ankle of the wearer, other rise mid-calf or cover the wearer's calves. Some cover the knees, and others can be stretched to cover apart of the thigh as well. The latter are also called stockings, even if made from cotton or wool.

Conspiracy theorists give many different accounts for why after doing laundry you end up with an odd number of socks. Legend has it, everyone will be reunited with their missing sock collection in the afterlife.
